The road to the crown - Great Britain and the Hanoverian dynasty Barbara Askew Monday 23 March 2020

How did the ruler of a small German state come to be crowned king of Great Britain in 1714?  We will compare the way of life and royal residences in both countries and the cross cultural transfer in art, music, literature and horticulture.  What did the Hanoverian kings from George I to William IV do for Great Britain?  George III was the first Hanoverian king to be born in Britain and never visited the Electorate.  Did the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars affect the Hanoverian connection?  We finish by examing what happened to Hanover after the Personal Union ended with the accession of Victoria in 1837 and the reign of the last king of Hanover, George V, who is buried in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.
